OBITUARY:
A 33-year-old Adams man was killed in a car-train collision in Adams early Tuesday morning.
Kenneth W. Kress, Adams, died at the scene. The train was westbound on the north side of Adams and the car was southbound when they collided at Seventh and Oak Streets in Adams at 12:40 a.m. The Burlington Northern train was pulling 113 empty coal cars and was enroute from St. Joseph, MO. to Lincoln. Glenn E. Johnson, 59, Crete, was the engineer. Kress's 1976 Mercury Bobcat was carried 141 feet from the point of impact, and was a total loss. Extent of damage to the train was unknown. The accident was the second one in two days involving a Burlington Northern freight train in the Adams area. In a Monday morning accident 1 1/4 miles nothwest of Adams, Eldon Ideus of rural Adams escaped injury when his tractor was struck and demolished by a train. Kress was born February 21, 1950, in Sterling and lived in Lincoln for a few years before moving to Adams 6 1/2 years ago. He was a member of the Adams American Lutheran Church, Adams. He attended Sterling High School and had worked for Dobson Construction Co. of Lincoln. for the past 8 1/2 years. Surviving him are his wife, a son, of the home; his mother. Loretta Kress, Sterling: brothers, Donald, and Virgil all of Sterling, two sisters. He was preceded in death by his father, two sisters and one brother. Funeral services for Kress will begin at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the American Lutheran Church, Adams, with Pastor Bruce Johnson officiating. There will be no public viewing. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery, Adams. Family prayer service will begin at 10:15 a.m. Friday in the Fellowship Room of the church. A memorial has been established, with Ken Cook and Lee Wilson in charge.
