Robert Stevens Fields, 87, of Afton, died on Sunday, July 22, 2012, at his residence. He was born on March 25, 1925, in Roseland, Virginia, the son of the late Ernest W. Fields and Nanny Noble Fields.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Helen Arlene Witt Fields.

Robert is survived by four sons, Robert W. Fields of Greenfield, Virginia, Daniel L. Fields of Fairberry, Nebraska, Gary W. Fields and wife, Kimberly, of Forest, Virginia, and Richard W. Fields of Greenfield, Virginia; two daughters, Debra K. Fields and Barbara F. Hartley, both of Greenfield, Virginia; one brother, Paul M. Fields of Greenfield, Virginia; one sister, Temple F. Ferrier of Waynesboro, Virginia; nine grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mr. Fields was a World War II United States Army Veteran and a POW. He retired from DuPont as a textile worker and was a member of the Rockfish Valley Baptist Church.

A funeral service will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 25, 2012, at Rockfish Valley Baptist Church with Pastor Roger Gilreath and Pastor Jim Lundy officiating. Interment will be held at the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6 until 8 p.m. Tuesday, July 24, 2012, at Rockfish Valley Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in his memory to the local Cancer Society. Arrangements are by Wells/Sheffield Funeral Chapel, Lovingston, Virginia, 434-263-4097.
