Dorothy E. Merchant, 74, of 113 Horner Road, Petrolia, died at 9:08 p.m. Tuesday [27 Jan 1999] at her home after a long illness. Born in Clarion County, Nov. 19, 1924, she was the daughter of Hays and Katherine (Lowers) Ace. During World War II, she worked at the Firestone plant in Akron, Ohio. She later worked with her husband and family at Merchant's Quaker State Garage in Karns City from 1965 – 1973. She was a homemaker and an avid gardener and enjoyed raising flowers. She belonged to the Bruin Ladies Bowling League and the Honertown Card Club. Mrs. Merchant was a Presbyterian. She is survived by three sons, George Merchant III of Petrolia, Danny Merchant, with who she made her home, and Gerald Merchant of Karns City; three brothers, John Ace of Kenai, Alaska, and Charles and Leonard Ace, both of Chicora; three sisters, Mars. Marie Timblin of Hilliards, Mrs. Blakney (Jean) Scott of Petrolia and Mrs. Bertha Stewart of Akron, Ohio; and six grandchildren. Her husband George F. Merchant, who she married March 22, 1946, died Nov. 25, 1994. A daughter, four brothers and four sisters also preceded her in death.

MERCHANT – Friends of Dorothy E. Merchant, who died Tuesday, Jan. 26, 1999, will be received from 7 to 9 p.m. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at Thomas M. Steighner Funeral Home, Chicora. Funeral services will be at 1 p.m. Friday [29, Jan 1999] at the funeral home with the Rev. John Hodge, pastor of the United Methodist Church of Bruin, Officiating. Burial will be at Bear Creek Cemetery, Petrolia.
