The funeral services of Samuel F. Hodgdon, the oldest citizen of the town, who died at his home on Hodgdon Hill Saturday, Jan. 29, was held in the M. E. church, Tuesday of last week, and was attended by his near relatives and many friends. The Rev. N. D. Witham officiated and music was furnished by the local quartet. The profusion of beautiful flowers was evidence of the true devotion of the family to the aged husband and father. Mr. Hodgdon has been in feeble health for over three years, but was not confind to his bed until about six months agho. The end came as the resnit of paralysis. He was born in Ossipee, N. H., July 13, 1823, coming to this town eighty years agho, with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Moses Hodgdon. He has made his home here since that time, being engaged in lumbering and farming during his active life. Mr. Hodgdon has been married three times, and leaves seventeen industrious children who have always enjoyed the best of health, except one son John, who died in West Virginia two years ago. His first wife was the daughter of Amasy Fogg who lived only a few months after their marriage. His second wife, Maria Leavitt was the mother of four boys and one girl, John M., Osmand M., Iola A., Ernest A., and Dexter W., who is engaged in the lumbering business in town. The last wife, Abbie Scales, is the mother of five boys and seven girls; Octavia M. Hagar, Maria C., Jerome O., Georgia A. Higgins, Otto J., Nina, Samuel F. Jr., Abbie, Sallie, Ruth, Dewey H. and William C. All were present at the funeral, except those who reside in California. Besides these he leaves a wife and two sisters, Mrs. John Chandler and Mrs. Ruth Adley of Milan Corner and a large number of friends to mourn his loss. He held the honorary gold headed cane, presented by the Boston Post to the oldest citizen of the town. The cane will pass to Lorenzo Jewett of Milan Corner.
