José Isac Norberto González was born in El Rancho de Vargas (now called Tinaja de Vargas), Michoacon, Mexico. He was the eldest son of Lorenzo Gonzales and Elena Quintero. He had 5 brothers & 3 sisters. His legal name in the United States was Joe Gonzales. In 1915 he married Mary Bill Liddia Large in Ennis, TX. There were nine children born in this marriage: Raymond Earl (b 1916, d 2017), David Lorenzo (b 1919, d 1985), Bethel (b 1921, d 1955), Daniel (b 1924, d 214), Peter Patrick (b 1927, d 2013), Thomas (b 1929, d 1984), Margaret (b 1931, d 1931), Sadie Mae (b 1933), and Samuel "Sammie" (b 1934, d 2008).

Joe was of the Christian faith and although he was bilingual he preferred his Spanish Bible. He died suddenly of a heart attack in January 1965 having just the month before, prepared a favorite Christmas Tamale Feast for his visiting Sons, Daughter, and grandchildren from Texas and Colorado. He is still greatly loved and missed by his surviving family and those who knew this kind and gentle man.
