Sam Gonzales was the last (9th) child born to Jose Isac Norberto Gonzales and Mary Bill Liddia Large. His was the grandson of Lorenzo Gonzalez and Elena Quintero and, Joseph William Large and Esther Josephine Briscoe.

As a young child the family's farm mule named "Jack" kicked at Sam but missed. This made little Sam mad and he found a stick and decided to give that mule something to remember. He hit the mule on one of the back legs as hard as he could swing. The mule instinctively kicked back and this time the hoof landed squarely on Sam's upper lip and teeth. The blow knocked him down and cut his lip and gums up to the nose. His sister found him lying unconscious and bleeding profusely. She ran for help to her father who wrapped him up in a blanket and began walking down the road toward the near by town of Lovelady. The driver of the first car stopped and assisted by rushing them to the town doctor. Sam survived this incident but related that he never struck that mule again.

Sam married Mary Helen Karber about 1952. The following children were born to the marriage: Sammie Jr. (1953), Debbie (1957), and Donna (1958).

Following lead of his older brothers, Sam changed his surname to Moore. Like his brothers (Raymond, Dick, Bethel, Pat, and Tom) in Colorado, Sam made a living building houses and apartments in Pasadena and Houston, Texas. His first marriage ended in the 70's and on 8 Dec 1983 Sam married a second time to Teresa Kirk. There were no children were born in this marriage. Teresa worked for the Salvation Army to which Sam donated much of his time in fund raising and helping the homeless. His barbeques with secret sauce ingredients was a huge hit at Salvation Army get-togethers.

In 2007 Sam experienced a life threatening aneurism. With major emergency surgery he survived but was told a part of the aneurism behind the heart could not be corrected. Thus, careful diet, blood pressure monitoring and medication became a new but manageable way of life. On Tuesday the 29th April, 2008 Sam was experiencing internal discomfort and sat down to rest in his favorite recliner chair. It is thought that the weakened lining of the aneurism gave way and he went on to his eternal rest. Sam had long expressed that he preferred cremation, to burial. His preference was honored and the urn holding Sam's last remains will be held in Pasadena, Texas. A memorial service was held for Sam on Saturday, May 3, 2008 at the Salvation Army Church of Pasadena.
