Youngest child of David White and Olie Payne Ruffin of Tipton County, Tennessee. William was educated at Rhodes College in Memphis and then married Lillian Chrisman on September 11, 1923 in Arkansas. Three children were born into their home: Bettie Joyce, Lillian Anne, and William Langston Ruffin. William Vernon Ruffin was killed as a result of an automobile accident on December 1, 1935. Also in the vehicle at the time of his death were his daughter, Lillian Anne Ruffin and niece, Louise Low Ruffin.
