James was the 5th of six children who lived to adulthood in the home of David White and Olie Payne Ruffin of Covington, Tennessee. He married Lois Bell, a younger sister to Annie, his brother David's wife. James was just getting started in life when he decided to enlist in the Army. He died at Hoboken, New Jersey, following an attack of influenza prior to mustering to go overseas for World War I. His body was brought back to Covington for burial. His wife Lois would give birth to their son three months following his death.
