He joined the Navy as soon as he was old enough, and made a career of it, retiring as a Chief Petty Officer.
After he retired, he and his wife, Eleanor Hunt Brightenstine, and three children, Shirley, Arlene and Robert returned to Mendocino County and settled in Ukiah. Elden worked for the County as a surveyor until he retired and moved to Potter Valley.
ELDEN L. BRIGHTENSTINE, 88, of Potter Valley, died of natural causes Friday,
March 8, 1996. There will be so service. He will be buried at the Pacific Ocean Cemetery, near San Francisco.
Brightenstine was born in Covelo, Dec. 6 1907. He served in the U.S. Navy for 20 years and was a veteran of World War II. He later worked as a surveyor for Mendocino County. He also served in the Mendocino County Sheriff's Posse.
Brightenstine was preceded in death by his wife, Eleanor. He is survived by children Arlene Briscoe, of Nevada, Shirley Ornbaun, of Ukiah, Robert Brightenstine, of San Ramon; and brother, Frank Brightenstine, of Redding.
