Theodore Brightenstine, well known and respected citizen of Round valley and vicinity for many years, passed away very suddenly at the home of his wife's mother February 7, at Upper Lake. He was 71 years of age but still retained a youthful spirit and those who knew him best will miss his old time cheery smile and kindly way.
Mr. Brightenstine was born in Missouri and while still too young to remember, his parents crossed the plains to California settling in Georgetown, Eldorado County, where they remained until the deceased was about eighteen years of age. The father having passed away the family moved to Dry Creek, Sonoma County, where Mr. Brightenstine met and married Miss Annie Sellars. While their oldest daughter was still young they moved to Round valley and from there to Buck Mountain north of Covelo, twenty years ago, where the family have lived since.
He had left home in the best of spirits to visit his children and old friends at Ukiah and Upper Lake, when the summons suddenly came, after a short illness, that had not been considered serious. He leaves quite a large family: Rollo Brightenstine of Healdsburg, John Brightenstine, Mrs. Roy O'Ferrall (Elvira), Mrs. Fred Reed (Daisy) of Buck Mountain, Mrs. Chas. Ciancio (Nettie) and Mrs. Al Burnham (Mable) of Ukiah, and another daughter, Mrs. George White (Ethel) of Humboldt county, who passed away about three years ago. Besides these there are four boys still at home-- Harvy, Ivan, Elden and Frankie.
Mr. Brightenstine was a kind and loving husband and father and a neighbor that was ever ready to do a kindly favor. There is only one member of that family left that crossed the plains. In those early days, an older sister, Mrs. Margaret Dunlap, of Bald Mountain, Covelo, Calif., who is spending the winter at a daughter's home in Ukiah. He had many relatives and friends in this neighborhood to follow him to his last resting place.

One of the oldest and best-beloved of our mountain neighbors, Theodore Brightenstine was buried from the Baptist church, Friday, Feb. 9th at 3 p.m. Mr. Brightenstine had been in failing health for some time past, and had gone to Lake county to be with his wife who was caring for her aged mother, when his summons came to enter into life eternal. Besides his widow, Mr. Brightenstine is survived by his sister, Mrs. Margaret Dunlap, and 10 children, one daughter, Ethel, Mrs. George White, having preceded him to the grave about two years ago. For some years Mr. Brightenstine had lived on Buck Mountain where he had a ranch, and where most of his family were born and raised. All of his children are well and favorably known to most of the Round Valley people, and while their father was not a man of large means, he left them all that most priceless inheritance, the memory of a good and upright man.
