Lela M. Little, third daughter of James Floyd and Blanche Felicity (Barbhart) DeHart, was born in Rawlins County, Kansas, April 1, 1898, and departed this life January 30, 1973 at the Dundy County Hospital. Lela had suffered severe heart attacks during the past two years and during this last illness had been hospitalized since December 18th.
As a small child she moved to Lake City, Iowa with her parents; but due to her father's health condition, the west lured them back again and in 1908 they returned and located in Dundy county. Lela could truly be called a pioneer daughter as she came from Iowa to Nebraska in covered wagon days in a horse drawn, then modern mobile home constructed by her father. She could recall many interesting and difficult experiences they encountered along the long and tiring journey of several weeks.
On July 21, 1917, she was united in marriage to Arthur L. Little, and to this union seven children were born, their eldest son, Vaughn Ronald Little, having died in infancy. Lela and Arthur spent their life time in the farming industry, having lived and farmed many years in both Hoover and Allston precincts. Because of Arthur's failing health they retired to Benkelman in 1955.
Lela was converted in her teens at the Mount Emmett church where she attended, and later was baptized in Indian Creek, northwest of Benkelman. She with her family attended and was a member of the Pleasant Valley Friends Church until moving to town in 1955 and later she united with the Benkelman Baptist Church on April 17, 1960 and had been a faithful member.
Lela was a member of the Dundy County Historical Society, a member of the Baptist Missionary Society and a past member of the Benkelman Garden Club and East Twin Lakes Extension Club.
Lela loved life, her family and friends, her yard and flowers; and her yard was always aglow with a succession of bloom from early spring until fall. When no longer able to do the yard work herself, kind and faithful friends and neighbors assisted and she was able to enjoy natures beauty even this past year.
Lela was a kind, concerened and loving mother and wife, having cared for her husband during his long and extended illness. She was a kind and considerate neighbor and friend and as long as her strength permitted was faithful in the visitation of the sick, shut-ins and elderly people. In fact she had assisted in the care of many elderly ladies in recent years.
Lela leaves to cherish the many fond memories her children; June Stamm and husband Harry, Maxine Watters and husband, Clyde, of Benkelman; Ernestine Smith and husband, Dale of Haigler, Nebraska; Geraldine Lahman and husband Dwayne of Escondido, Calif.; son Ned and wife Colleen of Longmont, Colorado; Joyce Vincent and husband Norman of Gainsville, Texas; a nephew Roy James Durbin and wife Barbara of Wheatridge, Colo., this nephew had made his home with them many years; twenty three grandchildren, two sisters, Eva Kitt and husband, Vearl of University Park, Iowa and Ernestine Hendrickson and husband Malvin of Benkelman, two sisters-in-law, Nellie DeHart of Wauneta and Mildred Wilson of Grant, Nebraska; besides a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Lela was preceded in death by her husband, her parent's, a sister Hazel, a brother Roy and half-brother Floyd, a grandaughter Dixie Pursley and three infant grandsons.
Funeral services were conducted at the Benkelman Baptist Church in Benkelman at two o'clock Friday afternoon with the Reverends Obed and Johnny Walker officiating. John Walker was the soloist and Carmen Burrell and Marita Todd the organists. Casket bearers were Marlin Stamm, Russell Stamm, Rick Little, Gary Stamm, Terry Watters and Stanley Hanes. Interment was in the Benkelman Cemetery.
