Virgil Pardon Pope s/o Cyrus Waterman Pope and Nancy Jane Brown.
His parents left Janesville, Rock Co., WI., to homestead in Oakwood Twp., Linn Co., Kansas for just a short time and later returned to Wisconsin. Virgil P. Pope and father Cyrus Waterman Pope both join Civil War in State of Kansas. Virgil P. Pope joined 10th Kansas Infantry, Co. C.
He married 3 Nov 1873 Sparta Monroe Co., WI to Elizabeth Goethe dt/o John Goethe and Katherine Goethe. They had 7 children:

Virgil Pardon Pope passed away Friday, December 29, 1933 at the St. Mary's hospital at the age of 87 years.
He is the son of Cyrus and Nancy Agnes Jane Brown Pope and was born in the town of Rutland, Jefferson County, April 22, 1846. He spent his boyhood days in and about Vernon county later moving to Kansas. At the age of 16 years he enlisted in the Civil War, where he served three years, later moving to Sparta where he has spent his remaining years. He was united in marriage November 3, 1873, to Eliza Goethe, who passed away October 23, 1922. To this union were born seven children: Ezra, Cyrus, Freelove, Clarinda and Lidda, who has preceede him and two sons, Elmer and Virgil, and one sister Mrs. Clara Waughtal whom servive him.
Services were held from the Plummer Funeral Home Sunday at 2:00 o'clock. Military honors were given to the veteran of the Civil War in services at 2:30 from the armory, the Rev. A. E. Frederick officiating. Interment was at Woodlawn Cemetery. Salutes were fired and taps blown as a final honor to the grand old man.
