Roman Joseph Knuijt was born 6 October 1923 to William Peter Knuijt and Caroline (nee Huberty) in Appleton, Wisconsin.
Sadly, Roman's father Willie suffered a debilitating stroke at 38 years old when Roman was only 5 years old, and passed away 8 years later leaving a widow and 7 children.
From a young age, Roman was determined to get the best schooling he could and graduated from Appleton High School in 1941 right before the outbreak of the Second World War. Around this time, he legally changed his surname from 'Knight' to 'Knuijt.'
He enlisted in the Navy and was station in the Pacific theater during the Second World War.
Upon his return to the U.S., Roman was in Kansas City and there met his future wife Lou Ellen Zeller. They married in 1947 and had 4 children together in Appleton. Roman owned and operated Knight Jewelers.
In the 1970s, they moved down to Lou's home town of Pilot Grove, Missouri. Roman opened another jewelry store in nearby Tipton.
After Lou's passing in 1991, Roman stayed in Missouri and later met Gertrude Karigan (nee Kraus). They were married in Oct 1993 and they made their home in Sedalia.
Roman died 3 October 1998 of cancer.
Roman was the definition of a 'people-person', was a talented artist and had his paintings shown in Sedalia. Roman also loved seeing his brothers and sisters, and spending time with his children and his grandchildren.
He is much missed
