MRS. W.H. GROUTAGE

A lifelong resident of southern Wyoming who was born during the height of the area’s coal industry and who lived to see its decline died in Rock Springs Wednesday.

She was Clara Groutage, 74, widow of Winfred Henry Groutage.

She was born Clara Ross April 19, 1885 in Almy, then a thriving coal camp near Evanston. Subsequently she lived in Cumberland, Hanna, Superior and Winton, all up-and-coming coal camps in her day. She had lived in Rock Springs eight years.

On New Year’s Day in 1906 she was married to Mr. Groutage in Cumberland.

They lived in Cumberland until 1912 when they moved to Hanna to live until 1921. They lived in Superior until 1923 when they moved to Winton.

During World war II and while they lived in Winton the Groutages lost a son, Melvin, who was killed July 9, 1944 while serving in Normandy. Mr. Groutage died in November, 1945.

Survivors are six sons, two daughters and 11 grandchildren.

The sons and daughters are Earl, James and Louis Groutage, all of Rock Springs; Fred of Reliance, Ralph and Percy Groutage, both of Salt Lake City; Mrs. H.E. (Lavona) Wooden of Afton and Mrs. Lee J. (Lucille) Moore of Concord, Calif.

Also surviving are two brothers and three sisters, Ted Attryde of Hanna, John Dexter of Rawlins, Mrs. William Bateman of Rock Springs, Mrs. Charles Higgins of Hanna and Mrs. Henry Fredericks of Laramie.

Funeral services were conducted Saturday afternoon at the L.D.S. church. Bishop James Sines conducted the rites and burial was in the Groutage family plot in Mountain View cemetery.

Pallbearers were three grandsons, Ronn and Don Wooden of Afton, Dale Groutage of Reliance two sons-in-law, H.E. Wooden of Afton and Dee J. Moore of Concord, Calif., and a grand-nephew, Albert Shedden of Rock Springs.

Mrs. Groutage resided at her home at 739 Connecticut, with her sons, Earl and Louis Groutage.
