Ill health and despondency are believed to have prompted William F Carbaugh, widely known farmer of the Marsh Creek district, to hang himself in the barn at his home Sunday morning.
Mr. Carbaugh had been in ill health for some time and had only recently submitted to two operations, but had been on the road to recovery lately, or so the members of his family thought.
On Sunday morning the widow, upon returning to the home after doing some small chores about the barn, missed her husband and with her son, Howard began a search for him. Mrs. Carbaugh found him hanging from a rafter in the front part of the barn. He was dead when found.
Mr. Carbaugh had stood on a hay rake and after adjusting the rope over the rafter had stepped off.
His widow called to her son and the latter secured three neighbors, Roy Walker, Arthur Knouse and Frank Warthen, who helped cut the man down. Dr. F A Miller, county coroner, was called and after examining the man issued a death certificate.
Mr. Carbaugh is thought to have become despondent on account of his ill health and also worry over the probability of poor crops due to the storm of Friday and Saturday.
He was the son of the late Mr. And Mrs. Manoah Carbaugh and was born near McKnightstown. He was a life long resident of Adams County and was a school director at one time.
Surviving are his widow, who was Miss Minnie Trostle, and the following children: Harry E and Roy A, both of Gettysburg R D; Charles R of Dixon, Illinois; Mrs. Lewis Bushman, Gettysburg, and Howard D and Mary A both at home. Five grandchildren also survive.
Funeral services from his late home Wednesday afternoon at 2:00, the Rev. Walter Pugh, formerly pastor of the McKnightstown Reformed church, officiating. Interment in Flohr's cemetery.
Son of Manoah and Susannah C Biesecker Carbaugh
