......Carbaugh is believed to have seen a shifting freight train on the rails and did not see or hear the passenger train as it approached. The noise from the machines in the furniture factory is also believed to have prevented Carbaugh from hearing the train whistle....

Carbaugh was a member of the 106th motor repair section, 28th division train, Pennsylvania National Guard unit here. He was a member of the Reformed church and also belonged to Gettysburg aerie, Fraternal Order of Eagles.

Survivors

The deceased was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William F. Carbaugh, of Highland township, and is survived by his widow, the former Miss Margaret Weikert, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Weikert, Highland township, and the following brothers and sisters:

Harry Carbaugh, Taneytown road; Charles Carbaugh, near the Hoffman orphanage; Roy Carbaugh, Highland township; Mrs. Myrtle Bushman, Baltimore pike, just south of Gettysburg and Mrs. John Herr, near Round Top....

Howard Carbaugh, Killed by Train, Is Buried Today

Funeral services for Howard Luther Carbaugh, struck and killed by a Western Maryland passenger train near the Gettysburg furniture factory, Tuesday morning were held this afternoon at the Bender funeral home, Carlisle street, the Rev. G. Howard Koons, pastor of the Fairfield Reformed church, officiating. Burial was made in Evergreen cemetery.

Pallbearers were Kermit Hereter, Merle Stultz, Roy Walker, Henry Trostle, Jr., Leslie Shothager and Howard Knouse.

NO INQUEST INTO TRAIN FATALITY

Dr. Edgar A. Miller, Adams county coroner, today said he will not hold an inquest into the death of Howard Luther Carbaugh, 28, of near Knoxlyn Mills, who was struck and killed by a Western Maryland passenger train in the local years, Tuesday morning.

Funeral services for the deceased will be (sic-were) held Thursday afternoon at two o'clock at the Bender funeral home, Carlisle street, with burial in Evergreen cemetery.

Friends may call at the funeral home this evening between 7 and 9 o'clock.
