Vester Lorene Guthrie

Mrs. Guthrie, age eighty-three years, two months and six days of age and a resident of East Prairie, Missouri, died Sunday, January 12, 2003, at the Missouri Delta Medical Delta Medical Center.

Born November 6, 1919 in Marshall County, Alabama to the late Syrous Sanders and Rosie Bell Helton Guffey, she married James Thomas Guthrie on October 10, 1936 and was engaged in farming with him until moving to East Prairie in late 1956 where she was a home care worker until illness forced her to retire. A member of the Free Holiness Church in Swearengin, Alabama, she faithfully attended the Southside General Baptist Church in Charleston, Missouri.

Survivors include three sons and two daughters-in-law, Nathern Sanders and Mary Guthrie of Charleston, James "Leon" Guthrie and Tony Clay and Brenda Guthrie all of East Prairie; seven daughters and two sons-in-law, Hester Susanna "Sue" Guthrie, Mary Katherine Haley, Ruby Lorene and Bob Jones all of East Prairie, Virginia Galor Elizabeth Wilson of Puxico, MO, Sarah "Ruth" Rhyne of Swearengin, AL, Shirley Leona Howton of Scottsboro, AL and Patricia Donnett and Lindel "Joe" Day of Arnold, MO; a brother, Hayden Guffey of Hazel Green, AL; five sisters, Serena Groves, Bonnie Stapler and Donnie Phillips, all of Swearengin, AL, Louise Foster of Glenoma, WA and Bertha Guffey of Owens Crossroads, AL; 46 grandchildren, 37 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild, several nieces, nephews and many friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, James "Tom" Thomas Guthrie, son Frank Guthrie, four sons-in-law, James F. Haley, Sharon E. Wilson, Roy L. Rhyne and Ernest Howton; three grandchildren, one great-grandchild, brothers, three sisters and several half-brothers and half-sisters.
