Glenoma man dies on Nebraska highway

Chronicle, The (Centralia, WA) - Friday, April 7, 2006

SIDNEY, Neb. -- A Glenoma man was killed and his two passengers were hurt Thursday morning in a single-vehicle accident on a highway in Nebraska.

Willie H. Guffey, 73, died instantly after his pickup truck blew out a tire about six miles west of Sidney, Neb., according to the sheriff's office there.

"He lost control, the vehicle rolled and ejected the driver," Cheyenne County Sheriff Darrell Johnson said Thursday.

Guffey's grandson, Mike Guffey, 23, and granddaughter-in-law Lisa Guffey, 22, were taken to Memorial Health Center in Sidney. They were both admitted to the hospital and listed in satisfactory and stable condition on Thursday afternoon. The couple lives in Glenoma.

Willie Guffey, who retired from Cowlitz Stud Mill in Morton, was taking a trip back to Alabama, where he was born and still has family, his son said.

They left Glenoma on Wednesday morning, and had already made it to western Nebraska, said Haden Guffey, in a brief telephone interview from his home near Omak.

The crash, on eastbound Interstate 80, occurred about 7 a.m. on Thursday. The 1997 Ford F150 was destroyed, the sheriff said.

Haden Guffey, 45, said his father first moved to Lewis County in 1959, but in recent years has been going back and forth between Glenoma and his hometown in Alabama. Willie Guffey was one of 22 children, and still has siblings in both states, his son said.

Willie Guffey has two living children, including a son, Robert Guffey, in Glenoma.
