Glenoma resident, James Sanders Guffey, 78, died Tuesday, April 30, in Olympia.
Mr. Guffey was born March 27, 1924, to Cyrus and Rosie (Helton) Guffey, in Scottsboro, Ala., where he attended school.
During World War II, Guffey enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in the Philippines. Following his military service, he moved to Washington, living in Toppenish and South Eastern United States, before settling in Glenoma.
Guffey worked in sawmill operations as a barkerman and supervisor.
A member of Christian Worship Center, Glenoma, since the early 1950's, he also was a member of Morton Chapter of Timber Operator's Union.
His interest included outdoor activities like camping and fishing. He kept and loved horses and participated in riding events including poker runs. He also enjoyed country gospel music and his grandchildren. His survivors said he was friendly, well-liked and didn't know a stranger.
Survivors include daughters; Debbie Coleman of Glenoma, Lillian Revell of Scottsboro, Patricia Hornbuckle of Yakima, and Loulita Armstrong of Tacoma, brothers; Owen and Haden, both of Alabama, sisters; Vester Guthrie of East Prairie, Missouri, and Bertha Foster, Serena Grove, Dollie Phillips and Bonnie Stapler, all of Alabama and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
His infant daughter, Mary Jean Guffey, preceded him in death.
Cremation arrangements are under the direction of American Burial and Cremation Services.
A memorial service for James Sanders Guffey will begin at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Christian Worship Center, Glenoma, with the Rev. Pete Allen officiating.
