The following obituary was published in the Rosenberg Herald on June 10, 1954:
"William F. Hartlage"
Funeral services were held in the Calvary Baptist Church of Rosenberg at 5 o'clock Sunday afternoon for William F. Hartlage, 75, of Foster, prominent and well-known Fort Bend County rancher. Rev. Basil T. Halbert of Calvary and Rev. W. E. Lowe of First Baptist Church, officiated. Interment followed in the Greenwood Memorial Park.
Mr. Hartlage, who had been in ill health for some time, took his own life Saturday morning. He was discovered in his barn where he had attempted to hang himself and apparently strangled in spite of the fact his feet were still touching the floor. Justice of the Peace M. J. Waller returned a verdict of "suicide by strangulation." He was discovered about 8 a.m. and a doctor and the Rosenberg Emergency Squad immediately summoned to the scene about six miles north of Rosenberg. At the time it was believed he was still alive.
A native of Germany, Mr. Hartlage came to America at the age of seven, his parents settling in Washington County. He came to Fort Bend County in 1894 and had lived here for the past 60 years.
Survivors include the widow, Mrs. Ivy Mae Hartlage; one son, William, of Richmond; four daughters, Mrs. Lena Lenora Holmes of Odessa, Mrs. Jennie Bell Richter of Sweeney, Mrs. Vera Margaret Carhart of San Antonio and Mrs. Eva Marie Sims of Rosenberg; one brother, August, of Rosenberg and a sister, Ms. W. D Talley of Rosenberg.
