The following obituary was published in the Rosenberg Herald on October 14, 1938:

"Edwin Elmo Hartlage"

Once more we are reminded of the terrible results from automobile accidents, which seem so far away and only thought of slightly, when it happens to someone unknown to us, and in distant points---that of the tragic death of Edwin Elmo Hartlage.

Last Sunday afternoon, while returning to his home, accompanied by his mother, Mrs. Pearl Hartlage and sister, Miss Jennie Belle, from a visit with another sister, Mrs. Y. E. Sims, in Brazoria County, he figured in an accident, when his car collided with another one, near West Columbia. Elmo was killed instantly and his mother and sister were painfully injured. They were brought to the Fort Bend Hospital and were unable to attend the funeral of their son and brother.

Mr. Hartlage was born in Rosenberg 25 years ago. He was a fine Christian young man, esteeemed by all of his acquaintances and the news of his sudden death was a blow to everyone. This was evidenced by the large assemblage and the many floral tributes--tears of sorow just seemed to pour from the eyes of both men and women as they said goodbye to this young man, following the funeral services at the church.

Elmo is survived by his father, Will Hartlage, his mother, Mrs. Pearl Hartlage; four sisters, Mrs. Y. E. Sims, Jennie Belle, Vera and Lena Lenora, and one brother, Will.

Funeral services were held at the First Baptist Church of which he was a member in Rosenberg Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock. Rev. L. O. Hollaway, pastor, conducted the services, which were most sympathetic yet consoling to the bereaved. Interment took place in the W.O.W. Cemetery in Rosenberg, with the Foerster Funeral Home in charge of funeral arrangements.

Sympathy, deep and sincere, is extended the bereaved in their hour of great sorrow. * * *
