Henry and his family emigrated from Germany in October 1888 aboard the Ship North America, arriving in Galveston that same month. They first lived in Burton, Washington County, Texas but moved to Rosenberg in November 1895 when Henry bought a farm.

The following obituary was published in the Rosenberg Herald on June 8, 1928:

"Henry Hartlage Called By Death"

Mr. Henry Hartlage, father of our esteemed friends and neighbors, August and Will Hartlage and Mrs. W. D. Talley, a large land owner, a respected honorable pioneer, answered the call of the great Commander and left this place of existence early Sunday morning June 3rd.

Mr. Hartlage was born in Germany, 75 years ago. He came to Texas in 1880 and Fort Bend County in 1895. Mrs. Hartlage preceded him to that other land in September 189(?).

Mr. Hartlage made his home in Galveston for several years and was stricken with paralysis while on the street there last week and died on the way to the home of his daughter Mrs. Talley.

Funeral services were held at the W.O.W. Cemetery here at 4 p.m. June 4, Rev. B. D. Clar of the Christian church officiating.

Funeral arrangements were made by the A. W. Clark Undertaking Establishment. * * *
