Eli Short Cooper was the son of Reuben Jackson Cooper-Cpt CSA 33rd Alabama Volunteers(Daleville Blues) Reuben and 17 of his men were killed in a freak railroad accident 6 miles South of Cleveland Tenn 4 Nov 1862.
Eli had two elder brothers who also joined the Southern Cause after their father's death(William Matthew and Marion Cooper). Marion and Matthew remained in Alabama after the rest of their family migrated to Texas. Another older brother John Arter Cooper, along with his wife, Missouri Frances Stallings ,came to Montague County around 1875(other families that came at this time were the Kilcreases, Alsobrooks, Stallings). Eli's(Better known as Short Cooper) mother was Sarah Austin Cooper-she came to Montague County with John Arter and his family in 1875.
There was a sister Sarah Elizabeth who was married to Albert J. Lee and another sister Frances F. Cooper(daughter of R. J. and Rebecca Austin Cooper) who was married to John F. Crosby who also fought in the Civil War.
