OBITUARY Iron County Reporter May 23 2018 “Obituaries: Barbara Beck”
ST. PAUL, Minn. - Barbara F. Beck (nee Berbeck (Bjorkbakka)) died May 9, 2018 at the age of 95.
She was born Feb. 11, 1923, in Iron River. She graduated from Stambaugh High School in 1940 and graduated from North Michigan University in Marquette in 1942 with her elementary teaching certificate. Her first teaching post (K-8) was in a one room school house in Brampton. She continued her teaching career in Caspian Elementary School. After a move to Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. in 1963, she taught in Pittsville Elementary School. In 1969, she completed her Bachelor of Science degree in Kindergarten-Primary Education from the University of Wisconsin Steven Point (UWSP) (Steven Point, Wis.). She continued her education at UWSP nearly completing graduate course work towards a Masters of Education degree. She retired in 1985.
She is survived by daughter Paula of St. Paul, Minn.; son Richard (Tiffany) of Claremore, Okla.; four grandsons: Travis of Dallas, Texas, Trevor of Tulsa, Okla., and Nathan and Connor of Claremore, Okla.
She was preceded in death by her husband of 62 years Raymond E. Beck; infant son Michael; mother Hilma (Kangas) Pedo; father Abraham Berbeck (Bjorkbakka); a brother Oliver Peltonen; sisters Rena (Peltonen) Rutz, Lila (Peltonen) Woodward, and Gail (Pedo) Carrico.
While in Michigan, Barbara was active in the First Lutheran Church of Iron River in several circles and served as president of the American Lutheran Church Women (ALCW) for one term.
While in Wisconsin, Barbara was active in her circle at First English Lutheran Church, served on her local teacher union's salary and benefits bargaining committee, and was a March of Dimes neighborhood fundraiser.
Barbara loved to garden, bowl, and read. She was a poet and received the World of Poetry's Golden Poet Award in 1988. She also became a collage artist later in life.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to: Minnesota Landscape Arboretum of Chaska, MN, Our Lady of Peace Hospice Care of St. Paul, MN or March of Dimes Foundation of Marietta, GA.
