STAMBAUGH – Hilma Pedo, 91, died Sept. 25 at the Iron County Medical Care Facility following a lengthy illness.
She was born Dec. 14, 1896 in Hangoniemi [other information says Honkaniemi], Finland. She came to the United States as a child with her parents and settled in Crystal Falls, where she attended school. She worked as a hotel waitress and nurse’s aide. She resided in Stambaugh and Iron River for many years and was well known in Finnish groups as a writer and speaker.
She is survived by a son, Oliver Peltonen of Mequon, Wis.; three daughters, Rena Rutz of Fullerton, Calif., Barbara Beck of Wisconsin Rapids, Wis. and Gail Carrico of Sterling Heights, and 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three husbands, Charles Peltonen, Abraham Berbeck and Otto Pedo; and a daughter, Lila Woodward.
Visitation was held Sept. 27 prior to services at the Brooks-Langenberg Funeral Home in Stambaugh. Rev. Fred Kinsey, pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church of Stambaugh, officiated.
Burial was in Stambaugh Cemetery.
