Robert Morton Ashby, son of John and Sarah Ashby, was born October 18, 1864, and died September 21, 1923, his age being 57 years, 11 months and 27 days.

He was united in marriage to Nellie Smith on February 26, 1890. To this union were born seven children, three sons and four daughters, of whom five survive. They are Mrs. Olga Kleinfeldt, of Chariton; Schuyler Ashby, of Chariton; Forrest Ashby, of Melrose; Mrs. Gladys Chappell, of Oakley; and Mable, at home. One daughter, Maude, died in January, 1915, and a little son in infancy.

Deceased was one of a family of nine children, of whom but three are left. They are Oliver H. Ashby, of Oelwein, Ia.; Mrs. Lizzie Ashby, of Long Beach, Calif.; and J. W. Ashby, of Conroe, Indiana.

Deceased had been in poor health for some time with a complication of diseases and death came on Friday night. He is at peace now, for there is no pain and suffering "over there." He was always ready to help where he could and was good to every one.

He leaves to mourn their loss his sorrowing wife, children and brothers and sister. Only one brother, O. H., with his family was able to be present at the last sad rites. Many other relatives and a host of friends are also left who will miss him, for he was always cheerful among them.

Funeral services were held at the U. B. church in Chariton on Sunday at 2 p.m., conducted by Rev. J. J. Dool, and interment was in the Chariton cemetery.
