CHAPPELL

Evaline Gladys Ashby Chappell, the fourth child of Robert Morton Ashby and Cornelia Smith, was born Sept. 1, 1895 at Watseka, Ill., and departed this life Jan. 20, 1988 at her home in Chariton, at the age of 92 years. She came to Iowa when she was six years old and grew to womanhood in Lucas County.

On Aug. 8, 1915, she and Charles Hugh Chappell were united in marriage at the home of her parents in Swede Hollow. To this union four sons were born: Lester Sheller; Lloyd Everett; Charles Jr.; and Virgil Dean.

Gladys and Charlie were farmers until Charlie's death 23 years ago. Gladys then moved to Chariton and to the home in which she lived at the time of her death.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Charles; two sons, Lester and Everett; one grandchild; three sisters and three brothers.

Survivors are her two sons: Charles Jr. and wife Lillian of Holden, Mass., and Virgil Dean and wife Ila of Des Moines; a daughter-in-law, Madlynne of Chariton; seven grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

Gladys and Charlie were baptized into the Methodist Church at Oakley. After she moved to Chariton she transferred to the First Baptist Church there. She was faithful in attendance.

She volunteered for many years at the Senior Citizens Center. This was work she enjoyed and especially being able to meet and visit with old friends and neighbors. Her job was to help fill and carry trays for the "Old Folks," many were younger than she. She was noted for her independence.

Gladys was a loving mother and was loved, admired and cherished by her children and grandchildren. She had a long, full and happy life and will be greatly missed by her relatives and a host of friends.

Funeral services were held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 23, 1988 at the Fielding Funeral Home with the Rev. Ronald Stein officiating. Serving as bearers were Ken Ruch, Dale Werts, Gary Bryan, Larry Knust, Marlin White and Roger Stierwalt. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
