MRS. NELLIE ASHBY
Mrs. Nellie Ashby, for many years a resident of Chariton and vicinity, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. E. Kleinfeldt, in this city, on Thursday morning, Sept. 22, 1939, at the age of 69 years, 1 month and 11 days, after an illness of several months with a complication of troubles.
Funeral services, conducted by Rev. O. O. Hobson, of Cambridge, formerly of Chariton, were held at the United Brethren church, Saturday afternoon at two o'clock, and burial was in the Chariton cemetery.
Nellie Smith Ashby, daughter of Wesley W. and Evaline Smith, was born at Watseka, Ill., on August 16, 1870. She grew to young womanhood in that vicinity and was married there on Feb. 26, 1890, to Robert M. Ashby, who passed away Sept. 21, 1923.
To this union seven children were born, three sons and four daughters. A son died in infancy and a daughter, Elma Maude, at the age of 17 years. The children left to mourn their loss are Mrs. Olga Kleinfeldt and Mrs. Mable Noel, of Chariton; Mrs. Gladys Chappell, of Derby; Schuyler W. Ashby, of Melcher; and Forrest M. Ashby, of Russell; twelve grandchildren; five great grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Glen Curtis, of Norwood; Mrs. Fred Willis, of Lacona; and one brother, Ray Smith, of Chariton.
She was a member of the United Brethren church for a number of years. She was a loving and devoted mother, a kind neighbor, always willing to help in time of need, and will be greatly missed by all who knew her.
