---John F. Ashby, son of John and Sarah Ashby, was born April 2, 1859 at Conrad, Indiana and died May 23, 1922 at La Plata, Missouri, being sixty-three years, one month and twenty-one days of age.
---Our deceased was married to Miss Mary Francis McBride. To this union there were born eight children, one of whom preceded him to the beyond while but an infant. The other children are Richard C. of La Plata, Willard E. of Stockton, Illinois, John J. of Riverhurst, Canada, Mrs. Nellie Baker of Thorton, Iowa, Harry W. of La Plata, Jesse Kennedy of Brookfield and Leslie K. Ashby who is at home with his mother.
---After the marriage at Richmond, Indiana, the home was there for some eleven years. Then, with his wife and family, he located in Illinois where he had his home for about fifteen years. After this, and the six years spent in the state of Iowa, he located in the neighborhood of New Harmony where he remained for eleven years. The last three years of his life was spent in the village of La Plata, Missouri.
---About sixteen years ago he began to be troubled with a nervousness which about five years ago began to be serious and continued to the end of his life which was brought about by a stroke. It was about 3:30 Tuesday that he died.
---In addition to the immediate family mentioned above, including his wife and children, there are left besides the ten grandchildren, three brothers, Joe J. Ashby, Concord, Indiana, Robert Ashby of Chariton, Iowa and Al Ashby of Ottumwa, Iowa; also one sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Ashby of California, and too, his step-mother, Hattie Ashby, and a half sister in Laforth, Indiana, to miss him in the coming days.
---Mr. Ashby, late in life, united with the Presbyterian Church at New Harmony. He was the first member received after the new church building was completed and dedicated.
---The funeral services were conducted from the Community Presbyterian Church of La Plata by the pastor, Rev. E.E. DeLong. Interment was in the La Plata cemetery.
