Mathilda Nagel dies at Berne
Mrs. Mathilda Nagel, 96, a native of Switzerland, died at 7:40 a.m. Thursday at the Berne nursing home, where she had been a resident four years.
Born in Canton Bern, Switzerland, Feb. 23, 1876, she was a daughter of Abraham and Marianne Neukom-Lehman. She was married in Switzerland in 1903 to Emil Nagel, Sr., and they came to the United States in 1910. Her husband preceded her in death in 1958.
Mrs. Nagel was a member of the First Mennonite church at Berne.
Surviving are three sons, C. August Nagel of Berne, Emil Nagel, Jr., of Berne route 1, and Walter F. Nagel of Swiss Village; one daughter, Mrs. Ralph (Dora E.) McClain of Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. Six sisters and four brothers are deceased.
Funeral rites will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Mennonite church chapel, with Rev. Gordon J. Neuenschwander officiating. Burial will be in MRE cemetery. Friends may call at the Yager funeral home in Berne from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today.

Funeral Saturday for Longtime Resident of Berne
Mrs. Mathilda Nagel, 96, one of the community’s oldest persons died at 7:40 am Thursday at the Berne Nursing Home where she had been a resident for four years. Death was attributed to infirmities.
Mrs. Nagel resided here since 1910. She and her husband, Emil Nagel, Sr., who died in 1958, operated the business, Nagel’s Quality Flowers here for many years, starting in 1910. Their residence was on East Main Street where they had their floral and garden business.
She was born in the Canton of Berne, Switzerland, February 23, 1876, a daughter of Abraham and Marianne Neukom Lehman. She was married in Switzerland in 1903 and the couple came here several years later. She was a member of the First Mennonite Church.

Mrs. Nagel was the last member of her family. Preceding in death were Carl, David, Benjamin and Cleophas Lehman and Emma Liechty, Pauline Harris, Leah Yoss and Caroline Flueckiger.
