Emil Nagel Dies At Berne Early (Handwritten-late) Sunday

Funeral Services Wednesday Morning.(Handwritten-Evening)

Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday in the First Mennonite Church of Berne for Emil Nagel, Sr., 80, of that city who died Sunday evening at 7:45 o'clock in the Berne Nursing Home.

He had been ill several months and bedfast four weeks.

Mr. Nagel was a native of Germany and had resided in Berne since 1910. He was a retired florist and landscape gardener.

Surviving is the widow, Mathilda; three sons, C. August and Walter F. Nagel, of Berne; Emil A. Nagel, Jr., of Cochranton, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. Ralph McCain, Fort Wayne; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a brother, August Nagel, West Berlin, Germany; and a sister, Mrs. Yost Dali, Lucerne, Switzerland.

Friends may call after 7 o'clock tonight at the Yager Funeral Home in Berne. The Rev. Gordon Neuenschwander will officiate at the funeral Wednesday, and burial will be in the MRE Cemetery.

Emil Nagel, Sr., Dies Sunday At Nursing Home

Funeral Wednesday A.M. For Retired Florist, 80

Emil Nagel, Sr., 80, of 717 Clark Street, widely known Berne florist and landscape gardener, passed away on Sunday evening at 7:45 o'clock at the Berne Nursing Home. Mr. Nagel had been a patient at the home the past two years and was bedfast four weeks prior to his death, which was attributed to carcinoma.

A native of Germany and later a resident of Switzerland, Mr. Nagel came here in 1910, with his wife and family. In Europe he had learned the art of landscape gardening and floral designing, and on his arrival in Berne he immediately launched in that business and was Berne's original florist and landscape gardener. He continued in that business until a few years age when his health o longer permitted.

Mr. Nagel was also one of the founders of the Globe Hatchery and operated the business for quite a number of years in connection with his greenhouse and floral business. He was also interested in other business and was interested in community civic affairs.

Mr. Nagel was a son of Frederick and Magdalena Blauer Nagel and was born at Island of Reichenau, Germany, on March 4, 1877. He was married to Matilda E. Lehman on April 17, 1903, in Canton Bern, Switzerland. They resided in Canton Thurgau until immigrating to this country in 1910.

He is survived by the widow and three sons and a daughter, C. August and Walter of Berne; Emil A. of Cochranton, Penn. and Dora, wife of Ralph McCain of Fort Wayne.

Services were held Wednesday morning at the First Mennonite Church with burial in the MRE Cemetery.
