From Bern to Berne:

1883: A major decision is made.

Benjamin Lehmann makes the acquaintance of Sarah Moser and plans to marry her the next year in the Mennonite church in Berne with cousin Rev. S.F. Sprunger officiating. Sarah, three years older at 23, is the daughter of Ulrich Moser and Maria Luginbuhl, early Swiss settlers of the Adams County Mennonite settlement into which she was born..

1900:

There had been sad news in 1896 that son Ben had died in Berne, Indiana, as a result of a fall at just 31, leaving Cyrus 10, Cordella, 6, Werner, 4, Waldo, 3, and Frieda, only eight months old, fatherless and dependent totally on their 36-year-old mother Sarah Moser Lehman. Now, four years later, they are all getting on as best they can, with Sarah providing room and board for teachers and others in order to make ends meet.
