John was the 4th son and 9th child of Philipp Burbach. After his Father's death his mother lived with him and his family until just before she died. In the 1840 census they are listed separately but next door. Perhaps John had built a new larger home for his growing family. John bought the No. 2 place, which adjoined the Mantion (sic) Place, at the time his father's estate was settled. After his mother died he bought the home place, which she had kept and which adjoined his property, on Nov. 21, 1846 when he was the highest bidder. He farmed all his life. He was a very devout member of the German Reformed Church and worshiped at Mull's Church where he was baptized and confirmed. It was in this church that all his children were baptized. He and his wife are listed as communicants in 1835 and 1852. They probably communed whenever communion was served but in those days it would not be very often and not always reported in the pastor's records. After his daughter, Ellen, died they raised two of her children, John & Matilda. In his will he names his wife, Sarah Elizabeth, as his administrator. All his children received an equal share of $135.42 with Ellen's two living children, John & Matilda, receiving hers. However, John J. did not receive a share as he had received more than his share during his lifetime. (contributed by Poorbaugh6.28, #47403531 on 11/21/15)
