John J. was a farmer all his life, first for his father then later purchasing the home farm (1) which was the original homestead farm of his grandfather, Phillip Burbach 1, John J. did not share in his father's estate as he, John J., had received more than his share during his lifetime (2). At some time his brother, Jacob 3.47, loaned him some money for in Jacob's Will (3) dated 6/24/1908 he stipulates that the judgement in J.J. Poorbaugh's farm is to remain in the farm till after his death Provided (sic) he cuts no timber and keeps the fire insurance in full force and paid up...
He was drafted to serve in the Civil War but was never called to active service (4) possibly because of his age. He was a democrat and held many of the township offices.
He was a lifelong member of the German Reformed Church first at Mulls where one of his children was baptized and then at MT Lebanon when it was built in 1875, serving as elder (5).
John J. was married three and possibly four times with 11 known children and eight stepchildren. His last child was born when he was over 73 years old. In the film of Saylor's Church Records (6) there is found the following: Child of John Poorbaugh, D. 1-9-1854, 6 Mo. 22 days. John J. is the only John Poorbaugh at that time to be this child's father. He must have been married 1st. about 1852 with his wife dying at this child's birth or sometime later. With nothing remaining of the marriage it had been forgotten. When he died his estate was worth $3462.OO (7).
