OBITUARY

Chariton, Iowa
Thursday, November 12, 1970

UMBENHOWER - Jess Umbenhower, son of Abraham and Nancy Jane Umbenhower, was born on a farm near Columbia, Iowa on Jan. 1, 1891 and died Nov. 1, 1970 at the age of 79 years, 10 months at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines of uremic poisoning following successful surgery for an abdominal aneurysm.

In his youth Jess' adventurous spirit took him to the ranches of Nebraska and the wheat fields of Canada until he returned to become a lifelong resident of Lucas County.

In 1914 he was married to Marie Foulks to which union four children were born: Kermit, Quentin, Nada and Nedra Evelyn, who died in infancy.

After marriage he settled on a farm and also worked at the old No. 1 coal mine; later he formed, with others, the Rite-way Coal Co. near Albia, but ill health forced him to give up this life of work.

He then began his career in real estate and became a prominent broker for nearly 50 years before his retirement. He was a founding member of the South Central Board of Realtors and served a few years as secretary-treasurer. He was also a member of the Chariton Chamber of Commerce, the Knights of Pythias, and served on the Tax Board of Review for several years.

On Dec. 18, 1952 he was united in marriage to Etha Edwards which brought him great personal happiness and satisfaction.

He is survived by his wife, Etha, his children, Nada and Kermit of Des Moines and Quentin of Coral Gables, Fla., two sisters, Mrs. Ora Nace of Chariton and Mrs. Flossie Baker of Sacramento, Calif.

He lived with honor and dignity and his life was governed by a desire to do right. He was a devoted husband and father. He will be missed by his family, relatives and friends. The only real immortality is what is left behind in the hearts and minds of those who loved and respected him.

Funeral services were conducted by the Rev. L. W. Mendenhall at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Nov. 4, at the Beardsley-Fielding Funeral Home. Interment was in the Chariton Cemetery.
