Services for Joseph Cooper Hurdle, 79, prominent landowner, merchant and planter of Mt. Pleasant, were held at 11 a.m. Friday, January 25 from the Slayden Baptist Church with the Rev. Thomas Hicks of Mt. Pleasant Methodist Church and Dr. Earl Kelly of the First Baptist Church of Holly Springs officiating. Burial was in the Slayden Cemetery under the direction of Reynolds Funeral Home.
Mr. Hurdle died in the Baptist Hospital in Memphis on January 23 where he had been a patient for a few days.
Mr. Hurdle owned Hurdle's Store and Gin at Mt. Pleasant. He had lived all his life in Marshall County. He was a Baptist.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Janie Catherine Hurdle of Mt. Pleasant; one brother, Jesse F. Hurdle of Holly Springs; and two sisters, Mrs. Marvin Jarvis of Slayden and Mrs. Albert Curl of Mt. Pleasant.
Pallbearers were Kenneth Leak, Everett Dean West, Alfred Loftin, Luke Loftin, Henry DeVore, Sam Anderson Jr., Sidney Person and Phillip Karr.
