Hettie E. Cockrell of Gatesville died Saturday in a local nursing home. She was 93.
Funeral services were held Monday at Gateway Baptist Church in Gatesville with Rev. Ron Dulany officiating. Burial was in Restland Cemetery.
Mrs. Cockrell was born August 25, 1899, in the Brookhaven community, daughter of Samuel and Mattie Gallagher Altum, an early pioneer family of Bell County. She was reared and attended school in Bell County, and attended Sugar Loaf School.
Mrs. Cockrell and her late husband farmed near Brookhaven for many years until Camp Hood was established, and they moved to Flat. After retiring the couple moved to Gatesville.
She was a homemaker and was a member of Gateway Baptist Church.
Mrs. Cockrell was preceded in death by her husband, T.F. (Top) Cockrell in 1968; two sons, R.T. (Buck) Cockrell in 1970, and Larry Cockrell in 1992; and by a daughter, Faye Murry, in 1993.
Survivors include two sons, T.F. (Tuffy) Cockrell of Huntsville and Sam Cockrell of Gatesville; five daughters, Dorothy Jones of Lake Jackson, Edna Potvin of Gatesville, Mable Benski of Arlington, Ferne Belknap of Gatesville and Jo Palmer of Conroe; three sisters, Ruby Paul, Ruth DeLord and Opal Diserens, all of Gatesville; 33 grandchildren and 50 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Bob Murry, Gary Jones, Brad Cockrell, Gerald Potvin, Garland Potvin, Steve Benski, Don Cockrell and Doran Belknap II.
