Elizabeth J. Conley
Elizabeth "Betty" J. Conley, age 71 of Laona, formerly of Malone, died of heart failure, Friday, July 22, 1994, at Dickinson Memorial Hospital in Iron Mountain, Michigan.
Visitation was at the Halverson-Suminski Funeral Home, Crandon, from 5-8pm. on Monday, July 25. Funeral services were held on Tuesday, July 26, 1994 at St. Leonard Catholic Church, Laona at 10:00 a.m. Fr. John Cerkas officated.
She was born September 17, 1923, at Hickory Corners, the daughter of Thomas and Elizabeth (Beekman)Gilligan. She attended school in Hickory Corners and finished her high school education in Laona.
On September 11, 1942, she married Edward Porter Conley in Baraboo. They lived in Baraboo, Milwaukee, Coleman, Waupun, Beaver Dam and Laona. While they lived in Laona, her husband was accidentally electrocuted on July 21, 1955 while working in Neenah. Elizabeth went on to do a wonderful job of raising four sons. After raising her sons she worked 20 years and retired from the Wisconsin State Prison for Women in Taycheedah.
She live for her sons, enjoyed watching birds, wild animals and the northwoods. She taught to always care about those less fortunate and had a great personal belief in God.
Survivors include four sons, Edward (Marcy) Conley of Keil; James (Sandy) Conley of Milwaukee; Patrick (L'Oree) of Brookings, SD; Michael (Lynne) Conley of Fond du lac; nine grandchildren, Kathy Mader, Edward, Kim, Kelly, Jim, Andy, Caitlin, Chad, and Brad Conley; six great-grandchildren, Julia, Jacklyn, Melissa, Michele Mader, Sydney Conley, and Cory Conley.
She is preceded in death by her husband, parents, sisters Evelyn (Bernard) Kessler, Leola(Duane)Baccus, Ellen (Lester) Ludeman; brothers Bernard, Donald, Norbert, Thomas, and Howard.
She served 18 1/2 years as a correctional officer for the Division of Correction at the Correctional Institute at Taycheeah.
She was also a cook for the Laona Elementary School. She enjoyed reading and crossword puzzles.
