Funeral services for Harold M. Kenyon, age 87, of Gary, SD will be at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, February 24, 2009 in the United Methodist Church in Gary, SD. Rev. Samuel Sunandkumar will officiate. Harold passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2009 in the Hendricks Hospital in Hendricks, Minnesota.
Burial will be in the Grandview Cemetery, Gary, SD. Honorary pallbearers will be Harold's grandchildren and great grandchildren. Active pallbearers will be Eugene Keimig, Troy Kenyon, Cody Kenyon, Casey Kenyon, Mark Kenyon and Sean Bray. Music will be provided by Dorothy Sander, organist and Jan Steele, soloist.
Visitation will be from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, February 23, 2009 in the Houseman Family Funeral Home in Clear Lake, SD and will resume Tuesday one hour prior to the service at the church.
Harold Melvin Kenyon was born on May 16, 1921 to Earl and Sophia (Krause) Kenyon on the family farm near Altamont, SD. Harold received his education in Deuel county schools.
Harold was united in marriage to Helen Walter on April 7, 1942 in Dawson, MN. Following their marriage, they lived near Gary where he farmed, was a sheep sheerer, drove truck and a thresherman throughout his working career. In 1972, they moved into Gary. Harold passed away on Saturday, February 21, 2009 in the Hendricks Hospital in Hendricks, Minnesota at the age of 87 years, 9 months and 5 days.
He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gary, SD. Harold served on the school board, city council, volunteer fireman and was an honorary Legion member. Harold also served as Vice President of IOOF Rental Village in Dell Rapids, SD, member of the Odd Fellows Lodge for 60+ years, past Grand Master Rebekahs Encampment, Historical Western Steam Threshers Reunion and Rollag member. He enjoyed fishing, going to farm sales and Thrashing B's, playing the violin and accordion, woodworking, watching wrestling, dancing and traveling in the RV with family. Harold also loved playing with his grandchildren, great-grandchildren and spending time with his neighbors.
He is lovingly remembered by his wife on nearly 67 years, Helen Kenyon, Gary, SD; four children: Joyce (Robert) Keimig, Gary, SD, Terry (Anita) Kenyon, Gary, SD, Bruce (Dawn) Kenyon, Hayti, SD and Dan (Theresa) Kenyon, Sioux Falls, SD; daughter-in-law, Kathy Kenyon, Clear Lake, SD; 12 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; 3 step-grandchildren; 9 step great-grandchildren; one sister Peg Sellin, Watertown, SD and many nieces and nephews.
Harold was preceded in death by two sons: Melvin and Mark Kenyon; daughter-in-law, Beverly Kenyon; his parents, two brothers: Carl and Bob Kenyon; two sisters: Luella Simonton and Leona Berge; and one step grandson Scott Peterson.
