Arlene “Peggy” Norton, age 89, of Watertown, SD, passed away on Monday, June 10, 2019 at her Residence. Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, June 15, 2019 at the United Methodist Church in Gary, SD. Burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery in Gary, SD. Visitation will be 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Friday, June 14, 2019 at the Houseman Funeral Home in Clear Lake.

Arlene Marie (Kenyon) Norton, also known by her friends as Peggy, was born on September 24, 1929 in Deuel County to the family of Earl and Sophie (Krause) Kenyon. She was baptized in the Gary Methodist Church. Arlene grew up on the family farm and attended Lone Tree Lake Country School.

She worked as a waitress in Canby and also at the Canby Hospital. She was united in marriage to Roy Albert Norton at the United Methodist Church of Gary on December 9, 1949. They made their home on a farm North of Gary until 1962. Then they moved to a small farm on the west edge of Gary. Arlene moved several times after that and currently resided in Watertown, SD. Eight wonderful children were blessed to this union and home. Roy Norton passed away on April 2, 1996.

Arlene served as President of the United Methodist Women’s group, was a delegate to the general Methodist Conference, was a member of the Church choir, Circle Chairman, Finance Secretary for 14 years, taught Sunday School for several years and was a member of the Church Quilters Group. Peggy and Roy were also Youth Group Leaders for over 10 years.
She was President and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary of Peden-Cole, Post 109 of Gary for many years. She also served as President of the Rebekah Lodge, was a member of the Gary 8’s square dance club and the Ladies Card Club of Gary. She worked as a Fry Cook at the American Legion’s 109 Supper Club in Gary for 9 years, worked as a Certified Home Health Aid in Deuel, Grant and Codington counties for over 10 years. She also coached girls softball and was a member of the woman’s softball team in Gary. She enjoyed playing in the local kitchen band for several years.

Arlene and her family managed a large vegetable garden which was a registered vegetable garden in Deuel County for over 20 years. She loved dancing and was a collector of angels of all kinds. She loved her family and cherished each time she was able to spend time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

On December 4, 1997 she was united in marriage to James Gene "Jim" Sellin, Sr in the United Methodist Church of Clear Lake. They lived in the Gary, Clear Lake and Watertown areas. Jim passed away on December 12, 2011.

Cherishing her memory are her children: Lyle (Carol) Norton of Watertown, SD, Judy (Laron) Pinckney of Rosemount, MN, Albert (Special friend, Barb Danley) Norton, Watertown, SD, Julene (Leon) Kaiser of Gary, SD, Jim (Special friend, Donna Scoglio) Norton, of Watertown, SD, Don (Brenda) Norton, Watertown, SD, Jerry (Benita) Norton, Mitchell, SD, and Jason (Noida) Norton, Thousand Oakes, VA; seven granddaughters; twelve grandsons; fourteen great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Sophie Kenyon; husbands, Roy Norton and Jim Sellin; three sisters: Leona Kenyon Berge, Luella Kenyon Simonton and an infant sister at birth; three brothers: Carl, Harold and Robert Kenyon; and one granddaughter, Mikayla Norton.
