Melvin Eugene Kenyon

Melvin Kenyon, age 43, a resident of Altamont, passed away November 17, 1991, at the Sioux Valley Hospital in Sioux Falls, S. Dak.

He was born August 13, 1948, at Watertown, S. Dak., a son of Harold and Helen (Walter) Kenyon. He grew up on a farm near Gary and attended rural school. He was united in marriage to Kathleen Eilers on September 28, 1968, at St. John's Lutheran Church in Marietta, Minn. After his marriage he and his wife moved to his Great Grandfather Walter's homestead near Altamont where he farmed with his uncle. In 1980 he took over the farm on his own and has farmed there since. He had a great love for his farm and his draft horses that he raised. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Gary and was a church trustee. He also was an officer in the Gary Rodeo Association, and he was a member of the Altamont Town Board.

He is survived by his wife, Kathy, and two children,

Cody and Lori, all of Altamont; his parents, Harold and Helen Kenyon of Gary; three brothers, Terry of Gary, Bruce of Hayti and Dan of Watertown; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Joyce) Keimig of Gary; and several aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one brother, Mark, a sister-in-law, Beverly Kenyon, his grand­ parents, and his father-in-law.

 

 

 

Funeral Services

 

Funeral services were held on Wednesday, November 20, 1991 at 1:30 p.m. in the United Methodist Church at Gary with Rev. Kip Roozen officiating. Special musical selections "How Great Thou Art" and "Amazing Grace" were sung by Bruce Melby accompanied by Pansy Gage at the organ. The congregation sang "What A Friend We Have In Jesus". Casketbearers were Jim Lutz, James Thomas, Joe Krause, Darwin Munsch, John Luecke and Iver Lein. All other friends are considered Honorary Casketbearers. Burial was in the Grandview Cemetery at Gary.

All relatives and friends are invited to return to the Gary Legion Hall following the services at the cemetery for lunch and fellowship.


Melvin was a hard worker who loved his family, friends and his horses. He lost his battle with lung cancer after 2 years. much too soon.
