Biography of Frank Raymond Townsend
Written by Sarah Townsend
Frank Raymond Townsend was the 8th child of Benjamin Franklin and Martha Ann (Bassett) Townsend. He was born in Decator City, Decator County, Iowa, June 22 1889. His mother passed away (of pneumonia) when he was four years old. His two sisters, Ida and Abigail raised him. He became lost in the woods when he was still a small boy. The family dog, "Shep", saved his life by preventing him from walking into the river. He joined and was baptised into the Church of Christ at the age of 15 years. Later he went to live with his sister in Copan, Oklahoma. There he joined the Methodist Church. He was drafted into World War I, September 22 1917, to serve for a period of emergency. He was discharged the 10th day of February 1919 by reason of telegram. He was wounded in action 3rd of October 1918 (scouting at the start of the Meuse-Argonne Offensive.) He attended college at the Kansas State Agriculture College, at Manhatten after the war. In 1931, he came to Arkansas near Hagerville. He was married February 11, 1934 (in Hagerville, Arkansas) to Miss Sarah Jones.
