PASSING OF A GOOD MAN

Benjamin Franklin Townsend, son of Eli and Abigail Townsend, was born in Berrian County, Mich., on December 4, 1847. Departed this life July 30, 1931, at 6:30 p.m., being 83 years, 7 months, 26 days of age, at the time of his going.

When a small child his parents moved with him to Ohio. At the age of 16 they decided to go west to find a home. After traveling for several weeks they came to Milo, Iowa, and located. Here he grew to young manhood and lived for several years. He was united in marriage to Martha Ann Bassett August 31, 1871 at Kirksville, MO. She preceded him in death January 21, 1894. This union was blessed with eight children-four girls and four boys. Two boys passed away in young manhood. He leaves to mourn his loss six children, namely, Mrs. C. K. Turner, Salina, Kansas: H. W. Townsend, Holly, Colo., Mrs. C. E. Wilson, Clinton, MO., at whose home he passed away; Mrs. F. M. Shanks, Mrs. Millard Spitznogle, Frank Raymond Townsend, all of Madison, Kansas. He also leaves one brother, E. L. Townsend, of Denver, Colo., 21 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

Deceased was converted at the age of 49 and joined the United Brethren church, of which he was a faithful member until his death.

Mr. Townsend was a man of high moral standards and put into his every day living the teachings of his Master. His beloved wife died 38 years ago. They had eight children, the youngest being four years old. To these children he gave himself unstintingly with the council of a wise and loving father and all the tender care of a mother. His life was a success. As no greater happiness can come to any parent than to know their children are upright and honest. They loved and respected this beloved father, in whom they had confided and trusted.

He had been in failing health for the past four years, suffering with heart trouble and had been most tenderly cared for by his beloved daughter, Mrs. C. E. Wilson, her husband, and their son, Wayne, with whom he had always made his home. About five months ago, his youngest son, F. R. Townsend, of Madison, Kan., came to help them care for him and grant his every wish. These children and grandchildren have served him day and night, as for the past five months he could not lie down and had to sit in his chair, and be lifted from place to place. He bore his sufferings well and was ever ready with a joke for his family, neighbors and his attending physician, Dr. Peelor.

His body was brought to the Sims Funeral Home, North Main Street, in Clinton, Saturday morning at 10:30, where Rev. Wolfe, pastor of the First M. E. Church, preached the funeral. The body was taken to Sandyville, Iowa, where he was laid by the side of his wife Sunday afternoon with a graveside service.

Mrs. Ida Lilian Wilson, Mrs. Abigail Shanks and Mrs. Dora Alice Spitznogle and Frank Raymond Townsend went to Iowa to attend the burial service.

Dearest Father, you have left us,
You may never know what grief
That your going has brought us.
Though our stay on earth is brief,
We will always miss you, father,
From your old accustomed place,
Till the angels ball us together
And we meet you face to face.
Then we'll feel your fond embrace,
Free from all cares and heartaches,
Which God alone can erase.
