Mattie Camilla Smith was born on May 14, 1894, in Caldwell County, North Carolina. She was the fifth of seven children born to Harmon Savanah Smith and Mary Elizabeth "Betty" Furches Smith.
According to her grandson, Mattie attended college for about a year at Appalachian University in Boone. We have been unable to locate any school records to verify this, however, the 1940 census says that she attended a year of college. It was told that she got homesick so she quit college and came home.
On December 25, 1915, she married Donel Bain Fowler in Caldwell County, North Carolina. They would go on to have seven children, however, only four survived into adulthood. For a short time after their marriage they lived in Catawba County. They eventually returned to Caldwell County and lived out their entire lives there.
Mattie and her family lived in a two story farmhouse on a large farm. In the 1950's Mattie and Donal gave each of their children some land. Mattie's son, Wyatt built his home near their farmhouse.
In the 1950's Bain suffered some health problems that made the two-story farmhouse an issue for him. So they moved into the home built by their son and their son and his family moved into the farmhouse.
Mattie never worked outside of the home, however, she did work to take care of her family. She was eventually issued a social security number in 1972, when she was 78 years old.
Mattie suffered a stroke on April 29, 1975 and passed away two days later, May 1, 1975. She was 80 years old. She was buried at Dudley Shoals Baptist Church Cemetery in Granite Falls.
