Granite Falls- An 81-year-old Caldwell County Farmer was killed Monday in a farm tractor accident near his home in Dudley Shoals community, RT. 1, Granite Falls.
Glen Richards, director of emergency services in Caldwell County, said today Sylvanus Herbert Smith was found dead beneath his overturned tractor about 10 p.m. by members of his family and neighbors who had gone looking for him when he failed to return home.
Richards said Smith had been dead for some time when he was found and the tractor lifted from his body.
He said the accident occured on an old logging road a quarter to a half mile off a main roadway.
Richards said no implements were attached to the tractor and that he did not learn what Smith's mission in the wooded area was.
Richards Transported the body to Caldwell Memorial Hospital in Lenoir in his four-wheel personal vehicle. A medical examiner ruled that Smith's death as accidental, he said.
Richards said he personally transported the body to Lenoir because two ambulances of the Caldwell County Amulance Service were tied up and a third was momentarily out of service.
Smith was born in Caldwell County on Aug. 22, 1892 to the late Harmon S. and Elizabeth Furches Smith. His wife Elizabeth Hayes Smith died in May, 1947.
Smith was a member of Dudley Shoals Baptist Church and a member of the woodsmen of the world.
Surviving are three daughters, Mrs. Herman (Nina) Kizer of Granite Falls, Mrs. Talmadge (Ruby) Bohler of Hudson, and Mrs. Clarence (Lois) Smith of North Wilkesboro; a son Hal J. Smith of Hickory; a brother O.L. Smith, Four sisters Mrs. E.M. Bowman, Mrs. Bain Fowler, Mrs. Ed Starnes, and Mrs. Oscar Sherrill, Five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.
