Lewis was born 1839 or 1840 in Missouri to John and Maggie Hembree. He married about 1856 in Missouri to Dorathiel L.G. Bowman. To this union, ten children were born (nine are known). Lewis served in the Union army during the Civil War for Company M, First Arkansas Cavalry. By 1885, they moved to Larimer County, Colorado where Lewis died. His wife went back to back to Missouri in the early 1900s.
