Bill was born in Dubois County, Indiana to John Hembree and his wife Mrs. Margaret "Maggie" Butler (her maiden name is unknown). Bill married first to Sarah Elizabeth Seat in 1853 in Stone County, Missouri and had two children by her before her death in December, 1855. It is this researcher's belief that she probably died in childbirth or shortly after her daughter, Mary Elizabeth, was born on December 17th. Later he was with the I1 Arkansas Cavalry. Bill was also part of the Stone County, Missouri Home Guards. He was discharged at Van Buren, Arkansas in September, 1865.
