Rachel was born on Jun. 27, 1837 to John Hembree and Mrs. Maggie Butler. She married at 16 to Benjamin Franklin Pinkley (1819-1862), a widower, who later died during the Civil War. It appears that Rachel and Benjamin had 3 children together. They were John Allen McDowell Pinkley, William D.M. "Maynard" Pinkley (died at age 3), and Benjamin Franklin Pinkley Jr (died in after a year). After Benjamin's death, Rachel hired a farm hand, Henry Daniel "Bog" Bowman, and soon they were living together without the benefit of marriage. They were engaged, but Bog deceived her, according to Rachel. (Ignore the 1863 marriage date below. I had to type something to make Bog appear after Rachel's marriage to Ben Pinkley). Rachel and Bog had 3 - 4 children together. Nancy Elizabeth Pinkley, and Darrathiel "Dora" Pinkley are the 2 that seem to be the most certain. He probably fathered Martha Jane Pinkley as well (born Feb of 1870). As to Rachel's two other children, Margarette Susana Pinkley and the second Benjamin Franklin Pinkley, born in 1865, the father is uncertain. Another man may be the father of those two children. A court case was brought against Rachel and Henry (Bog) and he left. On the 1900 and 1910 censuses, Rachel is the mother of 9 with 5 alive, so there is another infant or small child that died between the censuses. I, Cheri Mello, believe that this may be the 4th child of Bog Bowman.
