Levi Eckroat, of West Second street, died yesterday, aged 72 years. The funeral will be held from the residence at 2 o'clock Thursday, conducted by Rev. Browne, of the Christian church. Interment will take place in Burn's cemetery.

Levi Eckroate (Eckroat) born May 25th 1826
He is the son of John Eckroate of PA brn. 1798-12 Sept.1871 and Mary Eckenroth brn. 1796 of PA. He was the 3rd child out of 9 children. (Levi's father John had married his 2nd cousin Mary Eckenroth)

Please Note: Other sources point out that Levi Eckroate may be the son of Christian Eckenroth (4) and his wife Elizabeth (?) and that Levi Eckroate (Eckenroth) may have been taken into guardianship into John and Mary's family.

PA died 16th Sept 1904 in Mahaska County, Iowa -16 Sept. 1904 m. 3rd July 1866 to Sarah Ellen Hickman 25 May 1845-1928 daughter of Howard & Margaret (Funk) Hickman. During the Civil War John served from 10 Aug. 1862 to 17th July 1865 as a private under Captain Joshua B. Wells in company C, 33rd Regiment of IA Infantry. He was described as a carpenter- 5ft 6in tall, light complexion and having grey eyes and dark hair. He was dischareged at New Orleans, LA He had 5 children.

Christian died apparently as a bachelor on 18th April 1899 in Wapello county, Iowa.

Helena/Ellen/Eleanor brn. 28th December 1844 baptized on 18th May 1845, Sponsor: Daniel and Sara Christman" (Evangelical and Reformed Church Records; op cit. above, page 13) died 16th July 1910 in Mahaska county, Iowa. Married Peter H. Huffman brn. in 1843 married in 1866 had at least two children: SusanB. Huffman-1869 and Francis Huffman-29th March 1875.

D. Hiram brn. 12th Jan. at the time of his father's death, died a bachelor in Mahaska County, Iowa 18th March/ November 1864. He is buried in the third row on the West side of the fence of Butler Cemetery, Scott Township, Mahaska County, Iowa. (LDS GS#985387).

AGED LADY DEAD
Mrs. Mary Eckroat Passed Away at the Home of Her Daughter.

At the age of 81 years Mrs. Mary Eckroat died yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. A.L. Mosher, on North Wapello street. Mrs. Eckroat was born in Skuylkill county, Pennsylvania, Nov. 9, 1821. She was married to Hiram Eckroat Oct. 23, 1838, and two years later emigrated to Ohio. Mr. Eckroat died in 1847, and October 22, 1850 Mrs. Eckroat was married to Levi Eckroat, who died in this city, Sept. 7, 1898. Four children were born to the first marriage and six of the second. At the time of her death she had resided in Ottumwa about seventeen years and had been a member of the Christian church since 1859. Six children survive to mourn her loss, they are: Mrs. A.L. Mosher and Miss Belle Eckroat of this city, John Eckroat of Oskaloosa, Mrs. Ellen Hoffman and William Eckroat of Elm Park, Okla.; and Mrs Mary E Dillon of Little River, Kansas. The funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 1 o'clock from the late residence, Rev. Barley, of the Christian church, officiating. Interment will be in the Burns cemetery.

Mrs. Mary Eckroate died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. A.L. Moser, of North Wapello street, Saturday, at 4:25 p.m., at the age of 81 years. Mrs. Eckroate was born in Skulkill county, Pa., in November, 1821, moved to Ohio in 1840 and fifteen years later came to Iowa, where she has made her home since 1855. Mrs. Eckroate is survived by six children, John Eckroate, of Mahaska county, Mrs. Ellen Huffman and William F. Eckroate, of Pond Creek, Okla., Mrs. Mary Dillon of Little River, Kansas, and Mrs. A.L. Moser, and Miss Belle Eckroate, of this city. The funeral will be held Tuesday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the residence of Mrs. A.L. Moser, on North Wapello street. services conducted by Rev. J.M. Bailey, pastor of the Christian church. The interment will be made at the Burns cemetery.
