John A. Ritter and Mable Hohn Ritter married in 1908, in the Byron, Oklahoma area. John & Mabel had five children: Elmo Leon Ritter, Earl "Ike" Ritter, Mary "Sue" Ritter (Brake), John "Jack" Ritter and Gene Ritter. Their stories below.

John was born in McDonald County, Missouri. John's father was William Ritter (Son of John & Nancy Isabella Moore Ritter of Arkansas). William was killed in a wagon accident in MO.(1880) when John Albert was approx 3 months old. William was one of 12 children of John Ritter and Nancy Moore Ritter from Washington County, Arkansas. Baby John Albert was living on the farm of his maternal grandparents with his mom and dad, when his father died, in Missouri. William maybe buried on that farm.

John Albert's mother was Mary Ester Teel Ritter Beard (See Mary's page on this site for her history). Mary was a very young widow and remarried about two years later to Wm. Frank Beard). John Albert had these half siblings: Rob, Earl, Frank Jr., Ada, Ott, and Goldie Beard. John's grandparents on his mom's side were: Cynthia Hannah Teel Godfrey and Peter Teel. Peter (John's grandfather) was killed in the Civil War. The document for Cynthia's widow pension is online. Cynthia Hannah Teel Godfrey is buried in Carmen, Oklahoma. Burial location of Peter Teel (Civil War) is unknown to me).

The Ritter family and the Hannah families were from Washington County Arkansas. Cynthia moved to MO and married Peter Teel - their daughter Mary E. Teel was living with them when William Ritter came as a very young man to work for the Teel's (as the Hannah and Ritter families knew one another from Arkansas) and later married Mary Esther. They were married four years before John Albert was born. Three months later John Albert's dad died in a farming accident.

John Albert kept in touch with his Ritter relatives in Arkansas, even though he was only a baby when his dad died. I am aware of his friendship with his Uncle Daniel, Daniel's sons, and his daughter Nora Ritter Cobb. I have several letters that Nora Ritter wrote to John in the 1890's address to: Oklahoma Indian Territory. John Albert was also close to John Ritter Jr., who was William (his dad) oldest brother. His Uncle John Jr. left his belongs to John Albert in his will. I have the paperwork from an attorney's office in Arkansas.

Although John Albert Ritter did not live to see much of his children's lives or meet his son's wives or any of his grandchildren, he created a large family. Here is a bio of John Albert's family:

ELMO married Winona Mae Replogle in August 3, 1940, and had these children: Wanda "Darlene" Ritter Price, Jimmie Ray Ritter, Richard Lee Ritter, Linda Sue Ritter Stratton, and Janice "Jan" Merlyn Ritter Watts. Elmo and Winona raised their children in Cherokee, Ok.
*Darlene married Phillip Price from Anthony, KS., and moved to Federal Way, Washington, then to Auburn, WA. and shares time in Sun City, AZ. (Children: Leslie Anne Price Corneto; Lisa Marie Price Dietz; Marc Christopher Price; Lori Diane Price Dawson and 5+ grandchildren)
*Jimmie Ray married Patricia Temple from WA area. Jimmie later moved back to Cherokee, then back to WA to be near his children. (Children: James "Patrick" Ritter; Tanya Ritter Smith; Krystal Gayle Ritter Garvin; Ann Marie Ritter Baker and 10 grandchildren)
*Richard Ritter married Faye Daugherty, from Capron, OK. Faye and Richard live in Cherokee. (Faye had two children who Richard helped raise and loves: Jeanette Brattin and Brian Schwerdtfeder and 4 grandchildren)
*Linda married Brian Stratton, from Tacoma, WA., and they moved to Puyallup, WA. Brian passed away in a car accident. Linda continues to live in Puyallup and shares time in Sun City, AZ. (Children: Heather Lynn Stratton Kutha; John Brian Stratton; & Grandson - Heather's son Elliot Kutha)
*Janice "Jan" married Richard Irwin Watts from Enid, Oklahoma. Richard and Jan moved to Norman to go to Oklahoma University and still live in Norman, OK. (Children: Adam Nathan Watts, Clark Richard Watts; Whitney Lauren Watts - granddaughter: Temple Clementine Watts)

EARL "Ike" Ritter was a truly wonderful son and uncle. Ike contracted Polio when he was young and had some physical disabilities, but was oh so smart, determined, and independent. Ike owned Thoroughbred race horses and worked at the horse track in Anthony, KS. Later years, Ike moved home to assisted his mom who lived to be 100 years old. She was independent in everyday, except driving and Ike was an excellent driver. Mable (Mabel) lived a few weeks after Ike died, she was so protective of him.

MARY "Sue" Ritter met Donley Clifton Brake, from Balka, Oklahoma, when she was 20 years old. Sue and Donley move to Pomona, California and were married December 14, 1936. They were pregnant with their first child, and Sue had been born with a congenital heart valve defect. On morning of September 13, 1938, the baby boy was born (stillborn). Sue was in heart distress and was 6 months along, she died the same day in the evening.

JOHN "Jack" Ritter married Catherine Scofield in 1961. Cate had two lovely children, Richard & Sue Ciemeny. Jack and Cate worked as trainers for horse owners and travel many months each year to race their charges in multiple races across several states. They made their home in Anthony, KS.

GENE was also a horse trainer and traveled to race horses. Gene had a true love for horses. The horses loved Gene - a horse whisperer. Gene in later years moved home to be the cook for Ike and Mable. He had lost a lot of cortical vision in an accident in Denver. He could not drive, but Ike could! They were a wonderful gathering of Mom and sons in their ability to support each other. I always said Grandma was the brains! She was wonderfully smart and had a great memory. She was fortunate to keep all her cognition for her entire 100+ years. The sons were sharp too ;) I just also said Grandma was the brains of the team. :)
